The Ghana Skills Development Initiative (GSDI) is a project commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) with funding support from the European Union (EU) and Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
It is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in cooperation with the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) and other public and private sector stakeholders.
Since 2012, the Ghana Skills Development Initiative (GSDI) has been supporting the improvement of conditions for the acquisition of productive and decent work in Ghana through an inclusive, higher-quality TVET system that meets the needs of the labour market by improving the professional skills of young people in Ghana
The previous phase of the Project (GSDI III) pursued the objectives of providing demand-driven training that targeted groups such as job-seeking youth, apprentices, workers and owners of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) especially in the informal and agricultural sector as well as supported the Commission for TVET’s innovative approach to introduce competency-based training (CBT) standards and collaborative training models that combined both workplace-based training and school-based training modules at selected TVET providers.
However, the current phase of the Project (GSDI IV) focuses more on a shift of interventions from the micro to the meso level with a stronger support on anchoring processes for the competency-based training model within the Ghanaian public institutions, the TVET system and the private sector.
The Project also puts emphasis on the implementation of the developed approaches and ensures that they will be anchored in the national TVET system and handed over to partners such as TVET Teacher Training Institutions.
